Frequently asked questions

Behaviour support practitioner course: your questions answered

The questions people ask us most before they commit to the Six-Week Intensive.

Will my qualifications and experience be suitable?

The NDIS Commission considers a relevant qualification to be a bachelor degree (Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7) or higher in a relevant field, including Positive Behaviour Support, developmental education, education, psychology, psychological science, occupational therapy, speech pathology, nursing, social work, behavioural science and Applied Behavioural Analysis. The Commission may also consider other qualifications where they demonstrate alignment with the knowledge, skills and capabilities outlined in the PBS Capability Framework. Our pathway is designed for professionals with a relevant qualification and experience working with people with disability, children or families. Experience such as writing NDIS support plans, caregiver coaching, trauma-informed practice and behaviour support strategies maps well onto the NDIS Positive Behaviour Support Capability Framework. Answer our eligibility questions and fill out the application form. If you have the suitable qualifications and experience, we'll be in touch to organise a qualifying call back.

Does completing the course make me an NDIS behaviour support practitioner?

No. Completing the course does not, on its own, make anyone an NDIS behaviour support practitioner. Suitability is assessed and decided by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, based on your qualifications, experience and evidence of your capability against the PBS Capability Framework. The course gives you the training, supervised practice and portfolio guidance to build that evidence and prepare a strong application.

Is supervision and endorsement included, or do I need to arrange them myself?

Both are included. The Six-Week Intensive includes 6 hours of 1:1 clinical supervision and 6 hours of group supervision with a Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner, plus portfolio review. Supervisor endorsement for your NDIS suitability application is guaranteed when you complete the training and supervision requirements.

Do you work with providers who employ people with my background?

We can't promise employment, and we won't. Once you're found suitable, there may be opportunities to work with ConnectFirst™ as an independent contractor at $90–$150 per hour (your own ABN required), subject to suitability and demand. We contract under Assist Disability, a registered NDIS behaviour support provider, and we connect practitioners with organisations across Australia taking on newly registered BSPs. Early childhood and allied health professionals may also be eligible now for our Early Intervention Specialist contractor role, and our selective internship pathway provides training and supervision at no cost for shortlisted applicants who commit to working with ConnectFirst™.

What have previous participants gone on to do?

Every participant's path is different, because outcomes depend on your background, the NDIS Commission's suitability decision and demand where you live. What doesn't change is the support you'll have along the way: training, 1:1 and group supervision, portfolio guidance, endorsement when you complete the requirements, and connections to work once you're found suitable. We're happy to talk this through on your qualifying call back.
